I've created this page to answer some commonly asked questions about my services, and portrait photography in general:
Q: Do you do "senior photos"?
Q: How do I sign up?
Just contact me and we'll schedule a time. & location.
Yes, "971" is a local Portland number.
Q: What happens next?
If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I'll give you some general suggestions that may help you get ready for the shoot.
I'll usually arrive a little early to get set up (I don't charge for that), then we'll try a number of angles and ideas, and get the creative juices flowing. I like to keep the atmosphere light and informal. Portrait sessions work best when we're both relaxed and having fun. I don't have any limits on the number of clothing changes or locations - I only charge for time... and if we go just a little long? No worries.
Q: When do I get to see the pictures?
It usually takes me 1-2 weeks to get the photos edited and on-line so you can view them.
Q: How many photos do you take in a typical session?
As many as it takes. I have no limits or quotas. I make sure I get a sufficient quantity of quality photographs that cover the entire session.
Q: Can you do black & white photos?
Yes, I first capture all images in color. When I process the images, I may convert some images to black & white, sepia, or mixed modes if they appear more compelling in that style. I will include those as part of the proof package.
Q: Can you retouch the photos?
I consider quality post-processing (adjusting tonal qualities, white balance, etc) a fundamental element of quality photography . I often spend more time working on the images afterwards than I do taking them.
If you have any blemishes you'd like removed or subdued, I can do that quickly and easily at no extra charge.
Q: How much time does it take to do a portrait session?
This can vary quite a bit depending on what you want. I work as efficiently as possible, but if you want to change clothing or move to a second location, that should be factored-into the total time. On average, an hour is pretty good for one person and one location. I have no limits on the number of "poses" or "clothing changes" allowed in a session.
Q: Can I get the digital negative files (full resolution files)?
Yes, this is an option for any portrait session. You can use these to make your own prints. Contact me for more details.
Q: How many clothing changes & poses are included?
I don't have any limits. Why should it cost you more to change your clothes? or move to another pose? That's crazy! In fact, I like to do as many poses as possible! That's often the best way to get the creative juices flowing.
I only charge for time. Obviously, if you want to change your clothes many times, that will take more time.
Q: What should I wear?
Wear what you like, and what you feel best describes who you are. I only suggest avoiding clothing with prominent lettering or logos.
Also, if you are a couple or a family, plan your wardrobe ahead of time. Pick a color/style theme, and make sure everyone sticks to it. You may all look good individually, but your styles/colors clash, you won't look like a group.
Q: Where are you located?
I live and work in the Portland, OR metropolitan area. I'll meet you at a location that you prefer, or I can suggest a location. In addition to added convenience, this helps us keep the environment fresh with possibilities.
Q: Do you have a studio?
In order to keep my costs and prices down, I don't run an expensive studio. I specialize in on-location photography - mostly outdoor, but indoor as well. I do have a portable studio setup (backdrops, lighting, etc), so if you have access to any space and want something in that style, we can certainly do that. I've done a number of sessions that have mixed a few studio shots with some outdoor ones.
Q: Do you offer on-line proofing?
On-line proofing is included with every portrait session. I can also make you a CD-ROM proof for ordering. This can be easier if you don't have a high-bandwidth internet connection. Contact me for pricing details, proofing options & digital formats.
Q: Can you do a portrait of me and my pet?
Sure. But, be sure to ask your pet first!
Q: How far in advance can I schedule a session?
I don't have a limit.
Q: Are you available on short notice?
If my schedule is open, I'm available. Contact me and find out, it only takes a moment.
